My Perspective

I am pretty organized, with every important document in my life scanned and saved in the cloud. I have a shared calendar with my wife so she knows about our daughter’s next swimming class. I use Notion for detailed notes, and Google Keep for short, easily accessible notes. I do not like if things are not organized to the point that if someone changes the car stereo volume to a number not divisible by 2 & 5, I must change it 😐. There is more, but you get the point. These things are important but do not make my life any easier. Too much attention on everything is not good for my mind, productivity & efficiency. I could be extreme with the organization, but everyone likes to manage things to the best of their interest & abilities.

However, now I have moved towards the idea that I cannot do everything, and I need to pick what is urgent & what is important using Eisenhower Matrix.

I decided I could only read a few books, spend less time on my blog, and am unable to manage my 9-5 job and family time. Therefore, I decided to remove the clutter and pick what I am doing today. I have learned over the years in the corporate environment, the most celebrated buzzword is Multi-tasking. But now I have realized multi-tasking is a Myth.

When attempting to complete two tasks simultaneously, such as checking email during a meeting, you switch between the tasks rapidly. This task switching requires significant mental effort, often leading to errors and decreased productivity. I read an article on Asana that debunks common multitasking myths and provides alternative solutions. It's a must-read, reiterating that we should be perfect doing one thing and focus our energy & time on what is more important.

Let's explore 8 daily habits for success in detail.

1. The Power of Focus: "The Jack of All Trades is a Master of None"

"The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus." - Bruce Lee.

In our fast-paced world, distractions are everywhere. They may not be irrelevant, like books, social media, emails, or bills, but they still distract your attention. The temptation of multitasking and pursuing multiple interests can seem appealing and often productive. However, the truth is that spreading ourselves too thin often leads to mediocrity and errors in many areas rather than mastery in one. Concentrating on one skill or goal allows us to dive deeper, understand more, and achieve true excellence. This focus allows us to channel our energy, time, and resources into what truly matters, leading to greater satisfaction and success. Those social media notifications can wait while you read your book, so turn them off.

Think about the areas where you might be dividing your attention. Could focusing on one thing lead to greater mastery and fulfillment?

2. Embrace Your Passion: "Do What You Love, and Success Will Follow."

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work." - Steve Jobs.

Passion is the fuel that drives us toward success. We find joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose when we align our work with what we love. It does not have to be driven by finance, and it can be reading books or being healthy. Discovering and pursuing our passion requires focusing on one thing that resonates with our core values and interests. Steve Jobs, one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time, understood this principle well. He believed that doing what we love leads to great work, and great work leads to success. This doesn't mean we should ignore other aspects of life; rather, we should find the one thing that makes us come alive and dedicate ourselves to it.

What's your passion? How can you align it with your career or personal growth? Embracing and focusing on your passion can be the key to a successful and satisfying life.

3. The Mastery Mindset: "Excellence is a Habit"

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle.

Mastery is not an overnight achievement; it's a continuous learning, practice, and improvement journey. It requires a mindset that embraces growth, persistence, and dedication to one's craft. Aristotle's timeless wisdom teaches us that excellence is a habit we cultivate through repeated actions and focus. By committing to excellence in one area, we can develop the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed to stand out and make a meaningful impact. This mastery mindset is not about ignoring other areas of life but about choosing one skill or goal that aligns with our purpose and dedicating ourselves to it. Whether it's a career goal, a hobby, or a relationship, focusing on excellence in one area can lead to a fulfilling and successful life. A method that people around the world uses is Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method by  Francesco Cirillo. A technique that uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are known as "pomodoros." The method is based on the idea that frequent breaks can improve mental agility and maintain consistent performance throughout the task. By working in focused sprints with dedicated rest periods, individuals can maximize productivity and reduce the potential for burnout.

What can you do today to start building excellence as a habit? Consider the areas where you want to achieve mastery and take deliberate steps toward it.

4. The Myth of Multitasking: "Quality Over Quantity"

"Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus." - Alexander Graham Bell

As discussed earlier, multitasking has become a buzzword in modern society, often associated with efficiency and productivity. Alexander Graham Bell's metaphor of the sun's rays illustrates the power of focus. Just as the sun's rays can burn only when focused, our thoughts and efforts yield the best results when concentrated on one task at a time. Focusing on one thing can give it our full attention, creativity, and energy, leading to higher-quality outcomes. This doesn't mean we should neglect other responsibilities but prioritize and focus on one task at a time.

James Clear - author of best-seller Atomic Habits, has written a great article on “Why Fewer Priorities Leads to Better Work.” He reasons in the article, “Doing more things does not drive faster or better results. Doing better things drives better results. Even more accurately, doing one thing as best you can drives better results”. This truly summarizes the importance of doing one task and doing it right.

How can you apply this principle in your daily life? Consider the areas where you might multitask and explore ways to concentrate your efforts for better results.

5. Learning from Failures: "Failure is the Stepping Stone to Success"

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas Edison.

Failure is often viewed as a setback or a sign of weakness. However, when focusing on one skill or goal, failure becomes a valuable learning opportunity. Thomas Edison's relentless pursuit of invention led him to view failure not as a defeat but as a discovery of what doesn't work. By focusing on one thing, we can learn from our mistakes, refine our approach, and grow stronger in our chosen field. This perspective shifts your focus from failed outcome to a stepping stone toward success. By maintaining your focus, you can use your failures as an opportunity to learn and grow instead of getting lost in marginal gains. Sometimes, those marginal gains give a sense of achievement or absence of failure. However, success in low-priority tasks does not outweigh failures in more important ones. You must focus on one task, learn, and improve upon it.

How have your failures shaped your path to success? Consider the lessons you've learned from setbacks and how they've contributed to your growth. Embracing failure as a part of the journey to mastery can lead to resilience, innovation, and ultimate success.

6. Building a Legacy: "Be the Best at One Thing"

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." - Bruce Lee.

Building a legacy requires mastery and mastery requires focus. Bruce Lee's famous quote illustrates the power of repetition and dedication to one skill. By being the best at one thing, we can leave a lasting impact and create a legacy that resonates with others. Einstein was a genius and could have been an expert at many other things, including Physics. However, he was focused solely on one thing and was best at it. The same goes for Michael Schumacher, Michael Jordan, and many more. This doesn't mean we should ignore other aspects of life, but we should find one thing we want to excel at and dedicate ourselves to. Whether it's a skill, a cause, or a relationship, focusing on being the best at one thing can lead to a meaningful and lasting legacy.

What legacy do you want to leave, and how can you achieve it? Consider the areas where you want to make a lasting impact and take deliberate steps toward building your legacy.

7. Work-Life Balance: "Balance is Key to Success"

"You will never feel truly satisfied by work until you are satisfied by life." - Heather Schuck.

We are increasingly getting sucked into material things, careers, ambition and not paying as much attention to the most important part of our life - Family. In our pursuit of success, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of balance. Focusing on one thing doesn't mean neglecting other aspects of life; it means finding harmony between our work, relationships, and personal well-being. By focusing on one thing that aligns with our values and passions, we can create a fulfilling career without sacrificing our personal lives. This balance allows us to enjoy the journey, not just the destination, and leads to a more satisfying and successful life.

How can you find balance in your life? Consider where you might be overcommitting and explore ways to create harmony between your work and personal life.

8. The Journey of Self-Discovery: "Know Thyself"

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." - Aristotle

Focusing on one thing is not just a path to success; it's a journey of self-discovery. By understanding what we excel at and what resonates with our core values, we can align our lives with our true selves. I wrote an article - Embrace Authenticity and Stop Deceiving Yourself with Powerful Self-Awareness Techniques, where I discuss the importance of self-awareness in uncovering the truth about oneself. I recommend you read for insight into self-awareness. Self-awareness guides our choices, relationships, and goals, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling life.

What steps can you take to know yourself better? Consider the areas where you feel alive and passionate, and explore ways to integrate them into your life. The journey of self-discovery is a lifelong process, and focusing on one thing that aligns with your true self can be a powerful guide.
