Why Your Thoughts and Attitudes Can Make or Break Your Success

"You can or you cannot; either way, you are correct." This quote by Henry Ford highlights the importance of thinking in deciding our level of success and accomplishment in life. We are correct whether we assume we can or cannot achieve anything. Our attitude defines our thoughts, beliefs, and actions and impacts our outcomes.

The Mindset Effect on Success and Achievement:

Everything I have achieved in my life (or not) can be traced back to my mindset. If you do not believe in what you want to do, you are taking away any chances of such things happening in the first place. This lack of belief has cost me a lot in the past. I could have been somewhere else in my life, but I am where I am due to self-doubt and lack of belief. Don’t get me wrong; I have come a long way from where I started but not where I could have been. I was never & will be after money; however, I do need money to get only 2 things in my life - ownership of my time & choice. Now, I am doing what I need to do to achieve my objective in life. Now, I have changed my mindset, and that changes everything.

"Believe you can and you're halfway there." - Theodore Roosevelt

The Types of Mindset

The set of beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions that form our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions is referred to as our mindset.

According to Carol Dweck, a renowned psychologist & a famous mindset researcher, there are two types of mindset: the fixed mindset and the development mindset.

A fixed mindset is defined by the notion that our abilities, talents, and intelligence are unchangeable. This perspective frequently results in a fear of failure, a lack of desire, and a tendency to shun challenges. I was that person with a fixed mindset and believed that I could not change my mindset and, hence my circumstances. This has not only impacted me but my family too.

A growth mindset, on the other hand, holds that our abilities and intelligence can be enhanced and increased through hard work and perseverance. This mentality encourages a passion for learning, a willingness to take risks, and perseverance in the face of failure. Since I started reading books on self-help, self-improvement & motivation, I understood that everything can change by only changing my mindset.

A growth mindset can be a very effective strategy for achieving success and happiness in all our lives. We can learn to accept challenges, persevere through problems, and see failure as a chance for growth by adopting a growth mindset.

To create a growth mentality, we must first become aware of our attitude and any limiting ideas that may prevent us from moving forward. Then, we can attempt to change our mindset by embracing new beliefs and attitudes that promote growth and development.

Strategies for developing a growth mindset include:

  1. Embrace challenges: Instead of avoiding challenges, seek out opportunities to challenge yourself and learn new things. Remember that challenges are opportunities for growth and learning. Give it a try, and let yourself fail, too. Then, try again and again. Sometimes, fear of failure is what is stopping us from trying and winning. It's equally important to learn to fail.
  2. Embrace failure: Rather than seeing failure as a sign of incompetence or inadequacy, view it as a learning opportunity. Reflect on what went wrong and what you can do differently next time. I have failed so many times and put my head in my hand. But gone are those days; now, I see them as my steps to success. I pat on my back since I did not give up and kept going.
  3. Practice self-compassion: Be kind and compassionate to yourself, especially when facing challenges or setbacks. Remember that everyone makes mistakes and experiences setbacks and that being kind to ourselves is important in those moments.
  4. Cultivate a love of learning: Instead of focusing on grades or performance, focus on the process of learning and growth. Celebrate your progress and your effort rather than just the end result. Every little success counts and gives you motivation and confidence.
  5. Surround yourself with positive influences: As mentioned earlier, the people we surround ourselves with can greatly impact our mindset. Seek out positive role models and supportive communities that encourage growth and development. Leave those who laugh at you; find people who hold your hand when you fail.

By implementing these tactics and establishing a growth mindset, we may acquire the resilience, endurance, and determination needed to attain our goals and live a full life.

Cultivating a Winning Mindset

The good news is that mentality is malleable and can be altered with effort and practice. The only important thing is you have to have the willingness. These are steps for developing a winning mindset:

Step 1: Identity-limiting ideas and negative self-talk are the first steps. Consider the attitudes and thoughts that are preventing you from reaching your goals. Do you tell yourself that you aren't good or smart enough? Are you terrified of failing or being rejected? Make a list of your negative beliefs and self-talk.

Step 2: Refrain from having negative ideas and replace them with good ones. Once you've recognized your limiting ideas and negative self-talk, use evidence to refute them. For example, if you're telling yourself that you're not smart enough to start your own business, remind yourself of your past achievements and successes. Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations such as "I am capable of achieving my goals."

Step 3: Express thanks and concentrate on the positive. Gratitude can help you alter your mindset from negative to positive. Take time each day to reflect on your blessings and enjoy your successes, no matter how minor they may appear. Walk up to your near dear ones right now, and say thank you! See what an impact it makes.

Step 4: Accept failure and learn from your mistakes. Failure is an inevitable part of the learning process and should be considered a chance for growth and improvement. Instead of obsessing about your missteps, examine what went wrong and apply what you've learned to perform better the next time. You see that baggage on your back of your past failures; throw them out of the window right now. Stand tall and start again. You got this!

Step 5: Surround yourself with positive people and things. The individuals you associate with can have a significant impact on your thinking. Seek out people who will motivate and inspire you to be your best self.

All this used to sound like philosophy to me; however, once I started using these steps individually, I could see the change. It does not come easy, but I can tell you from my experience if you start something challenging with a positive mindset and belief that you can do it and that the only way it's going to end is that you will achieve it without any doubt. What's the worst that can happen? You will not. Well, you will still get good sleep knowing you tried everything with your heart. When I started writing this blog, I thought no one would read it, and there you are reading it 😊.

Examples of Successful Mindsets

  1. Positive attitude and hard work: Successful people often maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. They focus on solutions rather than problems and work hard to reach their goals. Oprah Winfrey is a great example of that. Even though she grew up in poverty and faced many challenges, she remained positive and worked hard to become one of the most successful media personalities of all time.
  2. Resilience: Successful people are often very resilient. In other words, you can bounce back from setbacks and failures. They do not give up easily and are willing to persevere in the face of challenges. Michael Jordan is a great example of that. He endured many setbacks and failures before becoming one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but he never gave up on his dream.
  3. Growth mindset: Successful people often have a growth mindset. They are open to feedback and willing to learn from their mistakes. This mindset promotes joy in learning, willingness to take risks, and resilience to setbacks. Do not get offended when someone is criticizing you. They are doing you a favor.
  4. Focus on priorities: Successful people tend to focus on their priorities. They set clear goals, develop plans to reach them and stay motivated and engaged despite obstacles. You can effectively manage your time and resources and focus on what matters most. Reduce the noise around you.
  5. Take risks: Successful people are often willing to take risks and get out of their comfort zones. They understand that growth and success often require taking calculated risks and trying new things. They can manage their fears and anxieties and take action without having all the answers.

A winning mindset is characterized by a positive attitude, resilience, a growth mindset, a focus on priorities, and a willingness to take risks. By cultivating these mindsets and using the tools and techniques outlined above, you can build a winning mindset that will help you reach your goals and live a fulfilling life.
