Unraveling Confidence: The Fundamental Elements

"Confidence is the companion of success." - Anonymous

At its core, unwavering confidence comprises three fundamental elements: self-efficacy, self-esteem, and social assurance.

Self-efficacy reflects your belief in your ability to accomplish tasks and attain your goals. The ignition fires up your actions & achievements and is cultivated through diverse experiences and victories, regardless of their scale. It encompasses every book you read, work & life you experienced, and your mistakes & triumphs. Everything will add to your story.

Self-esteem represents your self-worth. It is the mirror that reflects how you perceive your value and is profoundly shaped by the interactions and inputs of those around you. When your self-esteem is high, you feel deserving of respect, love, and success, which fuels your confidence. However, never fall into the trap of comparing yourself with others. A few months back, I wrote an article in this blog - Ways To Stop Comparing Yourself To Others and Improve Self-Esteem, that will interest you. It details how comparing with others pulls you down. Remember, everyone had a different starting point, so compare yourself with.....YOU!

Social assurance represents your comfort in navigating social scenarios. It's the trust that you can initiate, engage in, and maintain interactions without fearing judgment or rejection. Also, it would be best to accept all kinds of feedback from friends, family, peers & society in general, especially negative ones. In my article - The Power of Embracing Negative Feedback: Unlock Your Potential for Growth, I have detailed the importance of accepting negative feedback, learning how to handle criticism constructively, and unlocking your potential for growth with practical tips and strategies.

1. Embrace Self-Acceptance

"Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are." - Kurt Cobain

The first step towards unshakable confidence is embracing self-acceptance. It's about acknowledging your strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between. It's about understanding that you are a work in progress, and that's perfectly okay. Nobody is perfect, and that makes us humans.

Research has shown that self-acceptance is a key factor in developing confidence. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that individuals who accept their flaws and limitations have a higher level of self-esteem. So, instead of striving for perfection, strive for self-acceptance. It's the foundation upon which confidence is built. Writing a journal is a great way to start self-acceptance.

2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

"In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here's a chance to grow." - Carol S. Dweck

A growth mindset believes dedication and hard work can develop abilities and intelligence. It's the understanding that Failure is not a reflection of your worth but an opportunity for growth.

A failure is an event & not a person

A study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to persist in facing challenges, ultimately leading to greater success. So, embrace challenges, learn from your mistakes, and never stop growing.

3. Practice Self-Compassion

"Be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here." - Max Ehrmann

Self-compassion is about treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend. It's about acknowledging your suffering, recognizing that everyone makes mistakes, and being mindful of your emotions. We make mistakes, which is how we learn; I have a long list of mine, but let us not beat ourselves but move on. Self-blame will only shake your confidence and turn into a downward spiral, so stay away from it and start a habit of positive affirmation.

Research in positive psychology has shown that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, coping with life stressors, and decreased anxiety and depression. So, the next time you feel down, remember to be kind to yourself. It's a crucial step towards building unshakable confidence.

4. Set Realistic Goals

"The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

Setting realistic goals is about understanding your abilities and setting achievable challenges. It's about breaking down your dreams into manageable steps and celebrating each achievement. Make SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Goal setting is a powerful tool for motivation and confidence-building. So, set your sights on what you want to achieve, make a plan, and take the first step. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

5. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn

The people you surround yourself with can significantly impact your confidence. If you're constantly around negativity, it's going to be hard to maintain a positive self-image.

When we surround ourselves with positive-minded individuals, we are inspired to reach our goals and become better versions of ourselves. Positive people radiate love, kindness, and optimism, uplifting our spirits and improving our mental health. On the other hand, negative influences breed negativity, which drains our energy and our morale. Therefore, choosing our friends and acquaintances wisely and seeking healthy relationships that stimulate our growth and happiness is essential. Moreover, we should strive to be positive influences and spread joy and positivity to those around us. Surrounding ourselves with positive influences is an act of self-care and sets the foundation for a fulfilling and meaningful life.

So, surround yourself with people who lift you, inspire you, and believe in your potential. It's a powerful way to boost your confidence.

6. Practice Gratitude

"Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." -Melody Beattie

Practicing Gratitude is about recognizing and appreciating the good in your life. It's about shifting your focus from wrong to right and acknowledging the blessings you often take for granted. Practicing Gratitude can increase happiness levels and overall life satisfaction, boosting self-esteem and confidence. So, make it a habit to count your blessings. It's a simple yet powerful way to boost your confidence.

By intentionally focusing on the things in our lives that thankful for, we shift our attention away from negative thoughts and emotions and create more positive feelings.

Research has shown that regularly practicing Gratitude can improve physical health, increase happiness, stronger relationships, and even better sleep. By reflecting on what we are thankful for each day, we can cultivate feelings of contentment and appreciation, even during challenging times.

There are many ways to incorporate Gratitude into our daily routine, such as keeping a gratitude journal, expressing appreciation to loved ones, or simply taking a few moments to meditate on the things we are thankful for. By prioritizing Gratitude, we can improve our overall well-being and lead a more fulfilling life. There is a great article on mindful.org that explores How to Practice Gratitude.

7. Invest in Self-Care

"An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly." - Unknown

Self-care is about caring for your physical, emotional, and mental health. It's about prioritizing your well-being and making time for activities that rejuvenate and nourish you. I wrote an article on Self-care Isn't Selfish; It's Necessary that discusses why self-care isn't selfish but necessary to maintain mental and physical health. I recommend you read it for great insight.

Research has shown that self-care practices can significantly improve mental health, reduce stress, and increase self-esteem and confidence. So, whether going for a run, reading a book, or taking a bubble bath, invest in self-care. It's an essential step towards building unshakable confidence.

8. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill

Embracing Failure as a learning opportunity is about understanding that Failure is not a reflection of your worth but a stepping stone toward success. It's about learning from your mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth.

Failure helps us identify our weaknesses and strengths, gain valuable experience, and helps us develop resilience. Failure is not the opposite of success but rather a crucial part of the journey toward success.

When we fail, we should take the time to reflect, understand why we failed, and use that knowledge to improve ourselves or our work. Failure should not discourage us but, instead, should motivate us to keep trying until we succeed.

Failure can be seen as shameful or embarrassing in a world that values perfection. However, we should shift our mindset and see Failure as an opportunity for growth and learning.

Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." His attitude towards failure led him to invent the lightbulb.

A study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that individuals who view Failure as a learning opportunity have higher levels of resilience and are more likely to persist in facing challenges. So, don't be afraid to fail. It's an integral part of the journey towards unshakable confidence.

9. Practice Mindfulness

"Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it." - Sylvia Boorstein

Practicing Mindfulness is about being present in the moment without judgment. It's about accepting your thoughts and feelings as they come and go without getting caught up in them.

Research in psychology has shown that Mindfulness can significantly reduce stress, improve mental health, and boost self-esteem and confidence. So, whether meditation, yoga, or simply taking a moment to breathe, incorporate Mindfulness into your daily routine. It's a powerful tool for building unshakable confidence.

10. Believe in Yourself

"Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." - Christian D. Larson

Believing in yourself is about trusting your abilities and acknowledging your potential. It's about understanding that you can achieve whatever you want.

Research has shown that self-belief is key to achieving success and building confidence. So, no matter what challenges you face, always believe in yourself. It's the final and most important step towards unshakable confidence.

In conclusion, building unshakable confidence is a journey of self-discovery and growth. It's about embracing who you are, cultivating a growth mindset, practicing self-compassion, setting realistic goals, surrounding yourself with positive influences, practicing Gratitude, investing in self-care, embracing Failure as a learning opportunity, practicing Mindfulness, and believing in yourself. It's not always easy, but with patience and persistence, you can build the confidence you need to achieve your goals and live the life you've always dreamed of.

A study titled "The evolution of overconfidence," published in Nature, found that not just confidence but overconfidence—believing you are better than you are in reality—is advantageous because it serves to increase ambition, morale, resolve, persistence, or the credibility of bluffing, generating a self-fulfilling prophecy in which exaggerated confidence increases the probability of success. So, believe in yourself, even when the odds are against you. It's the secret to unshakable confidence.

In the end, remember that confidence is not something you're born with. It's something that you build. It's a journey, not a destination. So, take these steps, apply them in your life, and watch as your confidence grows. You are capable, you are worthy, and you are enough. Believe in yourself, and the world will believe in you too.

Preserving Your Confidence: An Unending Journey

"Self-confidence is the memory of success." - David Storey.

The Psychology Today article "The Essence of Confidence" by Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D., emphasizes that confidence isn't about certainty but about being comfortable with the possibility of Failure. Confidence comes from accepting life's inherent uncertainty and acknowledging that not everything is under our control. Rather than equating confidence with success, it is better to associate it with resilience. The more we become resilient to life's adversities, the more confident we feel. Accepting Failure as a part of the growth process and acknowledging our limitations help build true confidence.

Like a flame, confidence needs continuous nurturing to keep it alive and vibrant, especially in adversity or criticism. Here are some strategies to help ensure your confidence remains undimmed:

  • Practice self-compassion: Adopt an attitude of kindness towards yourself. Mistakes and setbacks are not failures but learning opportunities. Allow yourself the space to grow, stumble, and pick yourself up again.
  • Pursue your passions: Engaging in activities that you love not only provides satisfaction but also boosts self-esteem. Achievements in these areas reinforce your belief in your abilities, thus strengthening your confidence. I like to run a 5k once every week, and it boosts my confidence & self-esteem 😊.
  • Nurture healthy relationships: Surround yourself with individuals who encourage, support, and inspire you. Their positivity and belief in you can help fortify your self-confidence.
  • Continual learning and improvement: Confidence is bred through competence. The more knowledgeable and skilled you become, the more your confidence will flourish. Always seek opportunities to learn and improve.
  • Physical fitness: Regular exercise can contribute significantly to your confidence. It enhances your mood, provides a sense of accomplishment, and improves your self-image.

An article in Harvard Business Review on How to Build Confidence shares an expert view and principles. (see below)

Principles to Remember

Do:

  • Be honest with yourself about what you know and what you still need to learn
  • Practice doing the things you are unsure about
  • Embrace new opportunities to prove you can do difficult things

Don't:

  • Focus excessively on whether you or not you have the ability – think instead about the value you provide
  • Hesitate to ask for external validation if you need it
  • Worry about what others think — focus on yourself, not a theoretical and judgmental audience

Conclusion: Owning Confidence

"Confidence is when you believe in yourself and your abilities, arrogance is when you think you are better than others and act accordingly." - Stewart Stafford

Commanding unwavering confidence is a dynamic and continual journey, not a fixed destination. It calls for an unwavering belief in one's abilities, the resilience to persist despite setbacks, and a constant commitment to personal growth and learning. True confidence is not about always being right but about being comfortable with being wrong. It's not about not having fears but having the courage to face those fears head-on.

Unwavering confidence is an asset of incredible value. It gives you the strength to venture into the unknown, the courage to chase your dreams, and the resilience to bounce back from life's setbacks. It empowers you to be yourself without seeking approval from others, to express your thoughts without fear, and to create the life you've always wanted to live. It illuminates the path to your potential, allowing you to navigate life's journey with strength, grace, and, most importantly, faith in yourself.

The essence of owning confidence is recognizing your worth and potential, charting your course, and boldly stepping into your envisioned life. In the face of life's inevitable ups and downs, the spirit of confidence encourages you to keep going. With confidence, you can transform not just your own life but also touch the lives of those around you in meaningful ways.

Keep striving, keep believing, and remember; your approval is the only one that truly matters. Every step you take in fostering confidence is a victory, a testament to your strength and perseverance. Embrace this journey, honor your progress, and take pride in the amazing person you are becoming. After all, the power to build real, unwavering confidence resides within you.
